Leonard and George school Wembanyama in 1st away game, Clippers rout Spurs

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It didn’t take long for Victor Wembanyama to find out the road can be a tough place in the NBA. Kawhi Leonard scored 21 points, Paul George added 19 and the Los Angeles Clippers’ stars schooled the Spurs rookie in his first game away from home, a 123-83 rout of San Antonio on Sunday night. Wembanyama was held to 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and one block. He committed five of the Spurs’ season-worst 25 turnovers. “It’s not about how bad the struggles are going to be, but how persistent we’re going to be,” the 19-year-old said, sounding wise beyond his years.

Wembanyama makes tying basket in regulation, then earns his first NBA win as Spurs top Rockets in OT

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama was unstoppable with his first NBA victory within reach of his 8-foot wingspan. Wembanyama made the tying basket with 20 seconds left in regulation, the opening basket in overtime and finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds to help the Spurs beat the Houston Rockets 126-122 on Friday night. “I really, really love winning,” Wembanyama said. “It’s what I love most in life. So, of course, it felt great. Coming back in the locker room, (coach Gregg Popovich) acknowledged that it was my first-ever NBA win. It just made me proud for a moment, proud of myself.

San Antonio Spurs

American professional basketball team established in 1967 that is based in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs won five National Basketball Association (NBA) championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014) during one of the most dominant stretches in NBA history.
The team started out as the Dallas Chaparrals in the American Basketball Association (ABA). The Chaparrals were moderately successful, but the team was sold to a group of San Antonio businessmen in 1973, relocated, and renamed the Spurs. George (“the Iceman”) Gervin—a future Hall of Famer who joined the franchise midway through the 1973–74 season—was the star of the early San Antonio teams, a high-scoring shooting guard who would help establish the Spurs as a consistent contender throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
